Magento WEEE and FPT (Fixed Product Tax)

There is a little known area of Magento called WEEE that developers occasionally see while developing the themes for Magento projects. It's clear that Magento WEEE is some kind of tax. But what is it, exactly?
A quick Google search of the web term WEEE returns this top result:

Looking at the title, you assume it's not what you're looking for… what would a directive for electronics have to do with a tax in Magento?
In fact, it is the right answer!
What Magento WEEE allows you to do is apply a fixed fee tax on a particular product (FPT or Fixed Product Tax). Once enabled (System > Config > Sales > Tax > Fixed Product Tax), you can create a new product attribute with the FPT type and then edit the fixed fee tax for each product.
While WEEE was originally developed for Europe, Magento developed this solution to be flexible for any purpose the Magento store owner needs. For example, you could use Magento WEEE for:
- California Recycling Fee
- Gasoline Environmental Taxes (per gallon)
- Tariffs on Cigarettes
- Tariffs on Sugary Drinks
Essentially, Magento WEEE can be used for any type of flat fee tax that is applied per product.
